Founding Member of Corruption Watch Sierra Leone

Corruption Watch Sierra Leone was established in March 2013. The initiative was founded by a young Sierra Leonean, Alhaji Abu Koroma, from a small village called Alusainya in the Wara Wara Yagala Chiefdom, in the Northern Province of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Mr. Koroma was a pupil in junior secondary school form three when he took the bold step and conceived the idea. He was firmly against any form of corruption.

Alhaji Abu Koroma belongs to one of the largest tribes in the Northern part of Sierra Leone, the Mandingo ethnic group, and he has a deep respect for his own tribe as well as other native tribes.
After Mr. Koroma had founded the organization in 2013, serving as its founder and National Coordinator, he developed the organization in 2016 and presented it to the Government of Sierra Leone. His goal was to seek official recognition and establish partnerships with various line ministries with the mission to combat corruption in Sierra Leone.

Alhaji wrote the constitution himself when he was in Form Three. The foundational concepts he used to draft that constitution are the same ones that guide the organization to this day.

Corruption Watch Sierra Leone was established by an individual who also a private man. The founding executive director who played a key role in its establishment was Alhaji Abu Koroma.

Biography of Alhaji Abu Koroma .
He was born on the 12 December 1989 in small village called Alusainya, Wara Wara Yagala Chiefdom, Koinadugu District in the Northern part of the republic of Sierra Leone.

Alhaji Abu Koroma started his life as an activism during his primary level where he complained teachers for corporal punishment. He was the founding Executive Director of Corruption Watch Sierra Leone, taking the mantle when it launched organization in March 2013.

During his activism in Sierra Leone in 2010, Alhaji Abu Koroma extenively serious about his organization than looking for job elsewhere.

He denied working for government in the public sectors and prioritized his organization ,”Corruption Watch”, served as the National Coordinator of the organization.

Founding of Corruption Watch Sierra Leone: Alhaji Abu Koroma was a central figure in the organization’s formations, which was inspired by grassroots activists and the need for joining him responsibly to complaints government workers about corruption. He was involved in all aspects of setting up the organization, from establishing board of directors, raising funds to establishing its operational structure

What Corruption Watch Sierra Leone stand for

Corruption Watch monitors and exposes corruption in areas including corruption in the education sector, police corruption, leadership appointments (mainly in institutions that support democracy), corruption in the mining applications processes and its effects of communities, corruption in land ownership and tenure.

Corruption Watch also aims to ensure that the custodians of public resources act responsibly to advance the interests of the public, and to ensure that opportunities for entering into corrupt relationships are reduced.

Dangers of Corruption

Corruption weakens institutions, criminalises individuals and undermines social solidarity. Our primary objective, therefore, is to encourage and enable active public participation in combatting corruption by reporting experiences of corruption to the Anti-Corruption Commission ACC of Sierra Leone.

We believe that by shining a light on corruption and those who act corruptly, we promote transparency and accountability and protect the beneficiaries of public goods and services.

Each act of corruption that is prevented by our citizens underpins and fortifies civil society and thereby enhances democracy, the rule of law and the establishment of a more caring and just society.
